About Rainbow-Toned Coins

To many, rainbow-toned coins with spectacular eye-appeal are the most appealing of all numismatic treasures.

Types of rainbow toning include:

-Target/album toning

-Bag toning

-Envelope toning

These are all defined by the environment in which the coin was stored, and environment results in the wide variety of patterns they exhibit.

The thing to watch out for is that many coins today have been "doctored" through accelerated or artificial toning ("AT"). The line between what is acceptable and what is not is not always a clear one, and some outside experts have come to the conclusion that being in a slab does not guarantee that a coin was not "helped along." Still, we feel that the services reject more AT coins than they accept by far, and that less than 10% of holdered coins with rainbow toning actually are artificially toned.
